The redesigned Outlander offers a balanced package: The 3.0-liter V6 is smooth and powerful, and the Mitsu's tight suspension and quick, well-weighted steering complement its abilities. The six-speed automatic transmission offers a manual mode.
The Outlander's ride is comfortable and composed. There's no telescoping steering wheel, but the driver seat is well-shaped and sightlines are good. Adults can get comfortable in the second row, but the third row is for small children only.
Controls and instrumentation are straightforward, but ordering the navigation system inexplicably replaces the stereo volume knob with a toggle button. There's plenty of cargo capacity, but a confusing muddle of pull-straps makes folding the third-row seat more complicated than necessary.
Crisply detailed and attractive from every angle, the Outlander's exterior bodywork is a strong point. The interior design is also attractive, and materials quality is solid for this class.
Family Friendly
There's plenty room for the family in the first two rows (especially with the fore/aft adjustment in the 2nd row), while the third-row seat allows you to squeeze a 6th or 7th passenger in a pinch.
Comfortable
The Outlander offers well-shaped, well-cushioned seats (kid-size third row excepted) and a comfortable ride.
Cargo Hauler
A neat clamshell-style rear hatch offers easy access to cargo while providing tailgate seating during long afternoons at the soccer fields.
