1. Definitely the 6cyl. (#1 - more zip, #2 resale value, #3 Mpg difference is negligible) 2. My 2004 has had ZERO problems! and yes it has been used off-road. 3. Safety? Name any other consumer vehicle that comes with a functional roll-cage. We traded a dodge neon in on our Wrangler and my insurance premiums actually dropped! Im the proud new owner of a 2008 Rubicon Unlimited that I got about a month ago. I would NEVER go by ANYTHING that Consumer Reports says. Lows: Ride ...Rides just fine for the vehicle it is IMO handling ... Im not cutting corners or running laps at the Nurburgring. We've always had older CJ's and other Jeep Wranglers, but I can honestly say I LOVE my new Jeep Sahara Unlimited!! What a fun and comfortable ride. Earlier Cherokees had a Puegot transmission that was notorious for bad things happening. Your newer Cherokees and TJ Wranglers used the same transmissions and transfer cases. Early TJ's up to 2000 IIRC used the AX-5 manual (2.5L engine) or the AX-15 manual (4.0 engine). Not sure what the model # was for the autos. Newer TJ's use the NV line of transmissions along ... I'm in need of some advise. I have 2004 Jeep Wrangler X with 30,000 miles, and I bought it with 31" tires. Within the last month I have noticed a terrible shake in the jeep.
